🤷♂️ 4 Creative strategies to help you land your dream job
Published 10 months ago • 4 min read
Heyy Reader, How has your week been? Here in Toronto the weather has been super confusing... It's -13 one day and +13 the next.
Who needs a weather app, I just need an app that tells me whether to wear a winter jacket or not 🥶
LOL. Moving on...

👽 How to land your dream job - creatively
Here's the thing - there is no one size fits all solution when it comes to landing your dream job.
I have spoken to SO MANY people who are job hunting and almost all of them at some point - lose hope.
I don't want you to lose hope and so this letter focuses on sharing 4 ideas for you to try out and land that dream job.
1. Company Obsession - Traditional advice says to "Research the company you're applying for. Understand their values." So people go online and search for "Google's values", read one or two articles and consider research finished.
My advice - "Become obsessed with this company." And one way to approach this is to READ THE BOOK. There are various books written about the top companies in the world. If you read the book relevant to your dream company, it mentally (1) puts you ahead of the competition cuz most applicants would not have done this and (2) gives you confidence and clarity about how YOU fit into that organization and (3) tells you whether or not this company really is for you.
For Google: read "How Google works" by Eric Schmidt & Jonathan Rosenberg For Netflix: No Rules Rules: Netflix and the Culture of Reinvention by Reed Hastings and Erin Myer
Other ways to further your obsession: a) Set up Google Alerts about the company (send it to a new email so you don't get spammed) so you know everything about it that gets attention. b) Read the company's earnings reports, they highlight the most important stuff that you can use to your advantage in interviews. Sometimes even current employees don't know this stuff so you'll already be ahead.
2. Missing Link - Have you ever gone through a situation where you don't know which HR person to reach out to? Here's a quick tip to find out the "Secret HR folk". In many cases when someone gets hired, they love to post the "I'm so happy to announce..." post announcing their new role. In many instances they will also tag the HR person who was part of the recruitment process. Try to search for and find such posts, that are specifically for the roles that you are looking for. Anyone in that role who joined recently has a higher chance of posting something like this.
3. Leap of faith Cold DM's - Unpopular opinion but I believe being your authentic self when sending a cold LinkedIn DM is the best way to find your kind of people. I'll be honest, sometimes the DMs have not worked. But the same message worked in helping me land a job at Google while also building a sincere, honest & professional relationship with a recruiter. Below is a screenshot of what I send and why it worked. You could try a similar approach with your own vibe/flair/tone.
4. Creating a "hire me" Instagram Page - This is more of a complex idea but if you have design skills this one is something you will enjoy. Here's how it works. You make an instagram page with your name (@hirevishaljoseph for example) and on that profile you create a unique experience for the visitor to be able to read all about your experience and interests in a much more fun manner. For inspiration check out @hireankitachawla.
Conclusion:
It's not about what doesn't work. It's about what ends up working for you.
Remember you only need ONE YES to change your life. Getting No's is a part of that process.
I've tried so many things in my career. One of the things I did was I ran Facebook Ads targeting multiple branches of Dentsu Aegis Network Advertising agencies in India. My hope was that someone in the company would see the ad and call me. True story. 😅
If you want to checkout the facebook page I made for it it's here. It didn't get me an opportunity but it was another no I proudly collected.
You NEVER KNOW what will work. Thats the moral of my story. Now get out there, be awesome, try something different, take some risks and go get that dream job! 😊
🤖 Prompt: Practice your interviews with ChatGPT
"Please assume the role of an interviewer for the [Enter position] position at [Enter Company Name]. If possible, read up on articles on the internet which provide information about how this company conducts interviews for this specific role. Proceed to interview me based on this information that you acquire. Remember to include questions specific to this company that could potentially be asked based on the company's values and other unique parameters. I will be the candidate, and we will engage in a conversation with you asking interview questions one at a time, without any explanations. We'll begin with my greeting, "Hi," and continue the interview as I provide answers to your questions. Please remember to ask one question at a time and wait for me to reply before asking the next one."
Disclaimer: Do not rely on this interview experience to be indicative of what the real thing would be like. It's just a starting point.
